✨ Hey knitters! Fariba here from WatchKnitting! 🧶 Today, I’m excited to share how to knit the Two-Color Sprouted Seed Stitch in flat knitting! If you’ve seen my in-the-round tutorial, this one focuses on working the pattern flat.
🔹 Materials:
I’m using 3 mm straight needles with two fine yarn colors—the Main Color forms the base fabric, while the Contrast Color creates the seed-like details.
🔹 Pattern Overview:
This stitch is worked in multiples of 2+1 stitches and follows an 8-row repeat. For my sample, I’ve cast on 37 stitches with the Main Color, knitted two ribbed rows, and completed two repeats. Now, I’ll walk you through another 8-row repeat!
🔹 Getting Started:
- Row 1 (WS, Main Color): Purl across. I always slip the first stitch except when changing colors, then I knit it. The last stitch is always knitted.
- Row 2 (Contrast Color): Knit the edge stitch, then knit 1, slip 1 with yarn in back across.
- Row 3 (Contrast Color): Slip the edge stitch, then knit 1, bring yarn forward, slip 1. Key point: In Rows 2 and 3, we slip the same stitch. Also, in Rows 3 and 7, the yarn position shifts while slipping stitches, and we knit instead of purl.
🔹 Continuing the Repeat:
- Row 4 (Main Color): Knit across. This marks the end of the first section of the repeat!
- Row 5 (Main Color): Purl across.
- Row 6 (Contrast Color): Knit the edge stitch, then slip 1 with yarn in back, knit 1, offsetting the previous seed pattern. A tip: Always slip the stitch that was a seed stitch in the last repeat!
- Row 7 (Contrast Color): Slip 1 with yarn in front, knit 1.
- Row 8 (Main Color): Knit across to complete the repeat!
