Hello friends, Fariba here! Today, I’m excited to share a super easy and fun stitch pattern that uses the dropped stitch method. This design creates a lovely textured fabric, perfect for scarves, shawls, or even accent sections in sweaters.
Pattern Overview
- Cast on: Multiple of 3 stitches + 1
- Row repeat: 6 rows
- Edge stitches: Pick up at the beginning and knit at the end of each row
The main effect of this pattern happens on row 6, while the other rows create a simple repeating texture. For my demonstration, I cast on 16 stitches and added two rows of garter stitch as a base. This gives five full repeats of the pattern.
Knitting Instructions
Row 1, 3, 5 (WS):edge, rep (K2, P1), K2, edge
Row 2, 4 (RS):edge, rep (P2, K1), P2, edge
Row 6 (RS) – Dropped Stitch Row:edge, rep (P2, Drop 1 st down 4 rows, K5tog), P2, edge
Dropped Stitch Technique:
- Drop the next stitch and let it unravel 4 rows.
- Insert the right needle into the stitch, catching all 5 horizontal strands created.
- Knit all strands together as one stitch.
Tips for Success
- Always keep edge stitches neat—they frame your pattern beautifully.
- Work loosely on purl stitches if you want a softer, more drapey fabric.
This pattern is easy to follow, visually stunning, and very fun to knit. Repeat rows 1–6 to create a fabric with a delicate ladder-like texture.
